Cllr Jon Hubbard

Wiltshire and Town Councillor for Melksham South

Working hard across the Melksham Community

Tonight I reluctantly voted in favour of increasing the council tax precept in Melksham by 11p per month. That's not very much, only £1.37 per year, but I would still have preferred to not to increase it.

So why did I vote in favour of the rise.

Melksham Town Council, for the past 6 years, has been spending beyond its means. The costs of running the council have gone up year after year, but the council tax precept has been frozen. In many ways this is a good thing, but like all good things it couldn't last for ever.

Unlike Wiltshire Council who have received successive handouts from Central Government to fund freezing the council tax, for Melksham Town Council it has got increasingly hard to balance income against expenditure.

We also face the risk of seeing our income from council tax drop by about £72,000 next year as a result of a change in how council tax is calculated.

Putting all this together, I felt that we had to be prudent and take the necessary steps to protect the council and the valuable services we provide to the town and put in a small increase.

Some have told me that I am crazy to support a tax rise in an election year. I think it's crazy to play politics over prudence when dealing with public services.
